Nancy Whit traces her service to help building affordable housing in South Providence back to 1975 when she was Executive Director of local non-profit. “I became interested in the early initiatives by SWAP’s founders to save abandoned properties and sell them to those willing to renovate and live in them,” Whit says. By 1977 she’d moved into the Elmwood neighborhood herself and from then on she was committed to the neighborhood and SWAP. “One of the most rewarding initiatives was to include not only homes for sale, but also affordable apartments for rent. Today the need continues to grow, and SWAP continues to work on finding and developing appropriate sites and finding solutions to address the housing crisis. I worry our mission in the next 50 years will be even difficult unless federal and state governments provide additional funding.”
